The AST Framework
The AST Framework (Advanced Strategy Thinking Framework) is a structured analytical model designed to examine complex strategic environments through clarity, depth, and multidimensional thinking.
In an era where defence and geopolitics are shaped by uncertainty, rapid technological change, and evolving power dynamics, traditional linear approaches often fall short. The AST Framework provides a refined lens to evaluate strategy — not just as a plan, but as a dynamic process shaped by interaction, adaptation, and consequence.
Core Components of AST Framework
Capability (Means)
Focuses on resources and strengths — including military assets, technology, logistics, and industrial capacity that enable action.
Context (Environment)
Studies the broader environment — physical terrain, political climate, technological landscape, and information space.
Concept (Ideas)
Examines doctrines, strategic thought processes, and how force or influence is conceptualised and applied.
Coordination (Integration)
Evaluates how different systems, organisations, and stakeholders work together to achieve unified outcomes.
Control (Decision Power)
Analyses who holds decision-making authority, how escalation is managed, and how timing and tempo are controlled.
